Sixteen-year-old Elif Bilgin lives in Istanbul, Turkey, and like most kids who grow up in cities, has to deal with the effects of pollution every day. What makes her remarkable is that she decided to do something about it!

Deciding that plastic made with petroleum-based sources was one of the main pollution issues in her city, Elif set out to find a way to create a new kind of plastic, something that was made with more environmentally-friendly ingredients. After doing her research, Elif realized that potatoes have been used to make bio-plastic, so she decided to see if she could use another common food – bananas – to create the same kind of plastic.

After trying several times to get her experiments right, Elif was finally able to create a completely eco-friendly bio-plastic, proving that no matter who you are, you can make a difference!
